Imagine a side of Phuket where the neon lights of Patong feel like a distant memory, replaced by the gentle rustle of coconut palms and the soft lapping of turquoise waves against the shore. This is Cape Panwa, a hidden sanctuary that offers a glimpse into the Phuket of old—authentic, tranquil, and breathtakingly beautiful.

If you are a discerning traveller seeking relaxation and authentic beauty, this guide is for you. We are going to explore the unique geography of this stunning cape, reveal the best swimming beaches (which can be surprisingly hard to find in this region!), and guide you through top-tier dining experiences like the world-famous Baba Nest. Whether you are looking for the ultimate luxury accommodation or a charming boutique hideaway, prepare to discover a paradise that will steal your heart.

PANWA Beach in Phuket🚤⛱🏝 4K | Drone⛱️ – Joe P a s k e s

There are more than two beaches in the Panwa area. Panwa Beach, which most people call it, is Khao Kad Beach. The seabed is covered with dead coral, so it's not a great beach for swimming. Further south, Cape Panwa Beach is much nicer and many people don't even know it exists because access to the beach is reserved for Cape Panwa Hotel guests only. #joepaskes #thailand #phuket

What Makes Cape Panwa Special?

To understand the allure of Cape Panwa, you first need to appreciate what it is not. It is not a place for rowdy beach parties, crowded shopping malls, or jet skis buzzing across the horizon. Instead, the vibe here is sophisticated yet unpretentious. It is home to quiet fishing villages where life moves at a slower pace, sitting harmoniously alongside some of the island’s most high-end resorts.

Geographically, Cape Panwa juts out from the south-east tip of Phuket, creating a long, sheltered peninsula that offers stunning views over the Andaman Sea. Because of its unique position, it faces east and west in parts, offering glorious sunrises that paint the sky in hues of violet and gold. The topography is hilly and lush, with winding roads that offer glimpses of the sparkling ocean at every turn.

This location also provides easy access to a scattering of nearby islands, such as Koh Lon and Coral Island, which sit like emerald jewels on the horizon. When people talk about Cape Panwa Phuket, they are talking about a destination that marries the convenience of the mainland with the secluded feeling of a private island escape. It is this unique combination of accessibility and isolation that makes it such a rare find in modern Thailand.

The Enduring Charm of Cape Panwa: From Quiet Fishing Village to Serene Paradise

Nestled on the southeastern tip of Phuket, Cape Panwa presents a picture of serene beauty and understated luxury. With its tranquil bays, lush hillsides, and breathtaking views across Chalong Bay and the Andaman Sea, it’s a world away from the bustling energy of the island's west coast. But this idyllic hideaway wasn't always a destination for discerning travellers. Its story is one of quiet transformation, a fascinating journey from a humble fishing village to the peaceful haven we know today.

A Humble Beginning: Life by the Tides

At the dawn of the 20th century, Cape Panwa was a secluded and sparsely populated corner of Phuket. Life here moved at a different pace, dictated by the rhythm of the tides and the changing seasons. The community was made up of small, close-knit fishing families who lived in simple wooden homes clustered near the shore. Their livelihood was inextricably linked to the sea. Each day, longtail boats would venture out into the bountiful waters to catch fish and shrimp, providing sustenance and a modest income for the villagers.

The landscape was one of untamed natural beauty. Dense mangrove forests lined the coast, and coconut groves stretched across the gently sloping hills. There were no paved roads, only well-trodden footpaths connecting the small hamlets. The local culture was deeply rooted in traditional southern Thai customs, with a strong sense of community and a profound respect for the natural world. Animist beliefs and local folklore were woven into the fabric of daily life, shaping a unique identity for this quiet peninsula.

Panwa beach and its surrounding is not your usual tropical holiday destination, but once you drive there on a nice day, you will see a side of Phuket island not many take the time to enjoy. PANWA BEACH Panwa Beach, also known as Khao Kat Beach, is not a great swimming beach, and yet has the charm of these remote bays not many would take the time to explore while visiting Phuket. Located on the east coast cape but facing west, the whole area is peppered with luxury villas and few resorts, a great alternative to relax away from west coast crowded spots. THE PHUKET AQUARIUM The Phuket Aquarium in Cape Panwa is not immense as the tunnel itself it only a few metres long, but it is still a great place to entertain you and your kids on a rainy day and it might even be your chance to see baby turtles. Several rooms display aquariums of various sizes starting from small tanks with seahorses, some fun and colourful clownfish, the funny looking longhorn cowfish, or some squarish box-fish. It may not be as big as the new Aquaria at Central Floresta shopping Mall, but this is a Phuket Marine Biological Center dedicated to rescuing dolphins, dugongs and turtles often found in distress around the island.LAX RELAX There is not so much to do on Panwa but enjoy the tranquillity of such a unique hidden spot. You can sit down at a beach table and enjoy your reading, order drinks, food and some excellent tropical fruits. Then you can have a beach massage at one of the bamboo huts! This is pretty unique as it is very quiet and feel like Phuket twenty years ago!

The Winds of Change: A New Chapter

The mid-to-late 20th century marked a significant turning point for Cape Panwa. As Phuket began to emerge on the world map, infrastructure slowly started to reach this secluded corner. The establishment of the Phuket Marine Biological Centre in 1968 was a key event. This research institution brought scientists and academics to the area, drawing attention to its rich marine biodiversity. The subsequent opening of the Phuket Aquarium in 1983 provided a window into the underwater wonders of the Andaman Sea, attracting the first trickles of visitors.

This period saw the first signs of tourism, but it was a world apart from the mass development happening elsewhere. The families who owned land here were cautious. They recognised the potential of tourism but were determined to preserve the peaceful character of their home. This careful approach meant that instead of rapid, large-scale construction, development was slow and thoughtful. The first guesthouses and bungalows were simple, family-run affairs that offered visitors an authentic taste of local life.

The Rise of a Luxury Destination

The transformation into a luxury travel destination began in earnest in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Developers who shared the local vision for preserving tranquillity were drawn to Cape Panwa. They saw the potential to create exclusive resorts that harmonised with the natural landscape rather than dominating it.

Unlike other parts of Phuket, Cape Panwa's development has been characterised by low-rise resorts, private pool villas nestled into the hillsides, and boutique hotels that prioritise space, privacy, and stunning sea views. This conscious decision to avoid high-rise buildings and crowded beachfronts has been crucial in maintaining the area's serene atmosphere.

Despite this evolution, the peninsula has not lost its soul. The fishing village at Laem Panwa remains active, a living reminder of the area's heritage. You can still see longtail boats bobbing in the harbour and watch fishermen mending their nets, their daily routines continuing much as they have for generations. This beautiful blend of old and new is what gives Cape Panwa its unique charm.

A Legacy of Serenity

Today, Cape Panwa stands as a testament to sustainable development. It has successfully navigated the path from a quiet fishing community to a sought-after luxury destination without sacrificing its identity. The unique traditions of hospitality and the deep connection to the sea are still palpable. Local markets continue to thrive, offering fresh seafood and regional delicacies, while small, family-owned restaurants serve up authentic southern Thai cuisine.

The peninsula's current status as a serene paradise is no accident. It is the result of a collective desire to protect a special place. For travellers seeking peace, authenticity, and a connection to nature, Cape Panwa offers an experience that is both luxurious and deeply rooted in the history and culture of Phuket. It is a place where the gentle pace of the past continues to shape a tranquil present.

Essential Partners

All the Partners you need to make an Unforgetable Holiday

The Best Beaches in Cape Panwa

Finding the perfect beach in this part of Phuket requires a little insider knowledge. Unlike the west coast, where endless strips of sand are the norm, the beaches here are tucked away in coves and bays. However, what they lack in length, they more than make up for in charm and tranquillity.

Ao Yon Beach

If you are looking for the star attraction, look no further than Ao Yon Beach. This is arguably the best swimming beach in the entire area, and perhaps one of the finest on the island for those who prefer peace over parties. Thanks to its sheltered position, Ao Yon allows for year-round swimming, even during the monsoon season when the west coast waves can be dangerous.

The beach is home to a relaxed yachting community, giving it a slightly chic, international feel. You might see locals walking their dogs, children playing in the shallows, and sailors tending to their boats. The sand is fine and white, shaded by overhanging palms that offer a natural respite from the midday sun. It is the perfect spot to lay down a towel, open a good book, and lose track of time.

Panwa Beach (Khao Khad)

On the other side of the peninsula lies Panwa Beach, often referred to as Khao Khad Beach. This is a long, rugged stretch of sand that offers a completely different experience. While it is not ideal for swimming due to the rocky seabed and shallow waters at low tide, it is absolutely perfect for scenic walks.

The views here are magnificent, looking out towards Chalong Bay and the Big Buddha in the distance. It is a fantastic place to witness the quiet beauty of nature, away from the masses. As the sun begins to lower, the sky reflects off the wet sand, creating a mirror-like effect that is a photographer's dream. It is raw, natural, and wonderfully quiet.

Private Resort Beaches

One of the defining features of luxury travel in Cape Panwa is the exclusivity of its coastlines. Many premier spots, such as the pristine beach at Cape Panwa Hotel, are largely exclusive to guests. These private enclaves ensure a pristine experience where you never have to fight for a sun lounger.

The maintenance of these private beaches is impeccable, with crystal-clear waters and manicured sands. Staying at a resort with its own private beach access elevates your holiday from a simple trip to a truly VIP experience. It allows you to enjoy the Andaman Sea in complete privacy, with staff on hand to deliver a fresh coconut or a cocktail whenever the mood strikes.

Top Things to Do in Cape Panwa

While relaxation is the primary agenda for most visitors, there is plenty to do if you can tear yourself away from your sun lounger. The activities here reflect the sophisticated nature of the destination, focusing on wellness, exploration, and the sea.

Wellness and Spas

The wellness scene in Cape Panwa is world-class, attracting visitors who want to rejuvenate their minds and bodies. The area is dotted with award-winning spas that incorporate the natural surroundings into their treatments.

Cool Spa at Sri Panwa is a standout, perched high above the rainforest with sweeping ocean views. Their treatment rooms are designed to make you feel like you are floating among the treetops. Similarly, Cape Spa offers a sanctuary of refinement. We highly recommend trying the "Siam Touch" massage, a signature treatment that blends traditional Thai techniques with aromatic oils to melt away deep-seated tension. It is not just a massage; it is a holistic ritual designed to restore balance to your system.

Yachting and Sailing

Given its sheltered waters and deep bays, it is no surprise that Cape Panwa has established a reputation as a yachting hub. The sight of white sails against the blue water is a constant backdrop here. The area hosts Phuket Raceweek, a premier regatta that attracts sailors from around the globe for a week of competitive racing and lively social events.

For those who want to get out on the water without the competition, there are opportunities for sailing courses with operators like Sail In Asia. Whether you are a complete novice wanting to learn the ropes or an experienced sailor looking to charter a vessel, the calm waters here provide the perfect classroom. There is a profound sense of freedom that comes from harnessing the wind and navigating these historic waters yourself.

Dive Deep at Phuket Aquarium

Start your journey at the very tip of the peninsula, where the Phuket Aquarium awaits with a treasure trove of marine wonders ready to be discovered. This inviting centre is more than just a tourist stop—it’s a window into the fascinating biodiversity of the Andaman Sea and a champion for ocean conservation. Unlike many larger, commercial aquariums, Phuket Aquarium offers a relaxed pace and a genuine connection to the local environment, making it perfect for both families and curious adults.

Step inside and you’ll find more than 30 thoughtfully curated tanks, each one home to vibrant coral fish, playful seahorses, colourful anemones, and mysterious creatures like the longhorn cowfish. The highlight for many is the mesmerising underwater tunnel—walk through as sleek rays, swirling schools of fish, and even imposing leopard sharks glide silently overhead. It’s an experience that never fails to thrill, sparking wonder in visitors of every age.

Look out for the dedicated sections showcasing endangered species and local marine ecosystems. There are informative displays on the challenges facing Phuket’s reefs, from climate change to plastic pollution, and innovative solutions the centre is supporting, such as coral restoration and sea turtle rehabilitation. The Aquarium regularly partners with local schools and communities, running hands-on workshops and offering behind-the-scenes tours where you can see rescued turtles and learn about their journey back to the wild.

If you’re visiting with children, don’t miss the interactive exhibits and touch pools. Here, little ones (and the young at heart!) can gently touch starfish and sea cucumbers while discovering how each animal plays a vital role in the ocean’s delicate balance. The experience blends education with excitement, ensuring you come away with a deeper appreciation for the sea that surrounds Cape Panwa.

What truly sets the Phuket Aquarium apart is its focus on native marine life and sustainable practices. From the moment you step through the doors, you’ll find it’s less about spectacle and more about fostering a real love and respect for the sea. There’s always something new to learn or discover—making this an inspiring start to your Cape Panwa adventure.

Seaside Dining at Kantary Bay

Just a short stroll from the Aquarium, the promenade at Kantary Bay invites you to relax and soak up the gentle sea breeze as you choose from several delightful dining options. Café Kantary stands out as a welcoming haven for visitors of all ages, with its breezy open-air seating and charming view of the bay—perfect for people-watching or simply unwinding while fishing boats bob nearby.

At lunchtime, the menu brims with tempting choices to suit every palate. Their robust, aromatic coffee is a favourite pick-me-up, but don’t miss their refreshing smoothies or homemade cakes from the glass display. For something savoury, the Thai-style spaghetti is an inspired fusion dish, blending traditional Thai spice with Italian comfort and packing a satisfying, fragrant punch. Classic club sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas, and flavourful salads round out the options, while the dessert counter beckons with creamy gelato and fresh-baked pastries.

What makes Café Kantary a must-visit is not just the varied menu, but the laid-back seaside atmosphere and the trademark friendly service. Whether you’re refuelling after a morning of exploration or lingering over an iced latte, this spot perfectly captures the slow, sunny spirit of Cape Panwa. It’s the kind of place where conversations linger and new travel plans are hatched, right beside the sparkling bay.

Khao Khad Viewpoint

After lunch, it’s time to get your bearings. Head to the Khao Khad Viewpoint (Panwa Viewpoint), a hidden gem offering one of Phuket’s most breathtaking panoramas. The approach winds through lush hillside, and the final ascent involves a moderately steep staircase—a gentle challenge that rewards you handsomely at the top. It’s best to visit in the late afternoon, when the light softens over Chalong Bay and casts golden hues across the water—perfect for photography and quiet reflection. Early mornings are also lovely, with a gentle breeze and fewer visitors, making for a tranquil start to your day.

At the summit, an observation tower rises above the treeline, boasting uninterrupted 360-degree views. You’ll spot the iconic Big Buddha gazing serenely from afar, brilliant blue seas dotted with islands, and, on clear days, glimpses of distant mountain silhouettes. The viewpoint is well designed for lingering—comfortable seating areas are thoughtfully placed for rest or contemplation, and plenty of shade offers respite from the midday sun. Informational plaques in both English and Thai add context to the sweeping scenery, pointing out key landmarks and sharing stories of the area’s history and ecology.

Because the Khao Khad Viewpoint is off the main tourist trail, it’s often wonderfully uncrowded—ideal for capturing panoramic photos or simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. Bring a cool drink, take your time exploring the different vantage points, and let the gentle sea breezes refresh you before heading on to the next adventure.

Please do not forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to my Channel! Duration: 6mins:56Secs: https://www.phuket101.net/panwa-viewp...
Khao Khad Viewpoint (Panwa Viewpoint) is a solitary standing viewpoint on top of one of the highest and most remote hills of Phuket, and a bit of a mystery. With parking designed to accommodate a large number of buses and cars, a shop and a massive staircase leading to a large tower, you would expect to find a crowd up there… but when you arrive, the solitude of the place is striking. The whole place is surprisingly well maintained and clean, grass neatly mowed and signage bright. So get ready to climb up some two hundred steps and see how fit you are. Panwa Viewpoint building has two levels above the ground floor and the 360˚ view from the top is breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Phang Nga Bay. Some signboards written in English, Thai and Japanese are strategically placed around the circular room to help you recognize beaches and islands around the hill: TO THE SOUTH: Koh Sirey, Makham Cape and Taphao Island. TO THE NORTH: Phuket Town, Rang Hill and Kathu. TO THE WEST: Palai Beach and the Mangrove of Mudong Canal (where Mor Mu Dong Restaurant is), Wat Chalong and of course the Big Buddha of Phuket. TO THE EAST: Ao yon Bay, Ell Island, Lone Island and Tanan Island (well it’s more like a rock).

Island Hopping

Cape Panwa serves as the perfect launchpad for island hopping adventures. Because the pier is right on your doorstep, you can be on a boat and heading towards paradise in minutes, skipping the long transfers required from other parts of Phuket.

We suggest booking a day trip to Coral Island (Koh Hey), known for its vibrant coral reefs and teeming marine life. It is an excellent spot for snorkelling, with clear waters that allow you to spot colourful parrotfish and sea turtles. Alternatively, Maiton Island offers a more exclusive experience, often referred to as the "Honeymoon Island" for its secluded vibe. Many tours depart directly from the cape’s piers, making it an effortless day out for families and couples alike.

Day Trip at Banana Beach - Koh Hey – Phuketindex.com |

Phuketindex.com recently took day trip to Banana Beach on nearby Koh Hey (Coral Island). We’re due to depart by boat from Chalong Pier and it’s easy to find the Banana Beach boat at the pier as their logo is a banana leaf. We arrive early so the staff invites us to take a break at Kan Eang @ Pier Restaurant with its cool views. At 8.30 it’s time to get going and after only 15 minutes we arrive at the island as it’s so close to Phuket. Normally the departure times from Phuket are 8.30 and 10.00. #phuket #thailand #travelguide #localguide #BananaBeach #DayTrip #KohHey

Alternatively, Baba Soul Food offers a high-end take on local home cooking, proving that comfort food can be elevated to fine dining standards when the ingredients are this good.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

To ensure your trip to this secret paradise is flawless, here are a few practical tips.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Cape Panwa aligns with Phuket's dry season, from November to April. During these months, the skies are blue, the humidity is manageable, and the sea is calm. However, because the cape is naturally sheltered, it remains a pleasant destination year-round. Even in the green season (May to October), the rains are often short and sharp, leaving plenty of sunshine in between.

Getting Around

The area is spread out and hilly, so walking between resorts and restaurants can be challenging in the heat. We highly advise renting a scooter or a car for the duration of your stay. This gives you the freedom to explore the hidden corners of the peninsula at your own pace. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available, but be aware that prices can be slightly higher here than in the busier hubs like Patong or Kata.

Safety & Etiquette

Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles, and a little respect goes a long way. When visiting local villages or temples, dress modestly and remove your shoes before entering sacred spaces. Regarding beach safety, while Ao Yon is generally safe, always be mindful of red flags on other beaches, especially during the monsoon season. Currents can change quickly, so it is always best to swim where locals or other tourists are swimming.
